SWAU presents building campaign to Joshua

Southwestern Adventist University officials presented a new multimillion dollar initiative for the campus to the Joshua Chamber of Commerce on Wednesday at its quarterly luncheon.

Chamber members enjoyed turkey, dressing, deviled eggs and pumpkin pie provided by Sunrise Grill before Gary Temple, vice president for university advancement, and Dena King, assistant vice president for university advancement introduced the “Back To Our Future: Renewing the Vision” campaign.

“Most of you have come by to see it. It’s a pretty old school, about 115 plus years old,” Temple said.

King said the campaign began 18 months ago as the administration worked with the board of trustees to identify needs and created five initiatives to address the most important issues with the $21 million campaign.

“It’s ambitious compared to what we’ve done in the past, but already we’ve completed our faculty and staff portion of the campaign and they far exceeded their goal,” she said, noting that they raised $250,000 — $50,000 more than the goal. “We’re really excited about just how the whole thing is starting out. We’re technically still in the silent phase, but we wanted to share with you some of the plans for the school so you would be a part of it as well.”

The project calls for a new university center with academic and lab spaces for the nursing department, space for computer science, a new dormitory, and space for communications, which will house the radio and TV station. The plans also include renovations for the cafeteria and Callicott Student Park, where much of the athletic activity takes place.

King also mentioned the university’s focus on enrollment and endowment funds.

“The part that I’m most excited about is that new building includes a 1,000 seat auditorium, where currently we don’t have quite enough room for all the students to meet together in one place for assembly. The even better part is that we can have events and performances where the community can come be a part of that with us.”

The leadership and advanced gift campaigns are under way, while the other phases will begin early 2010.
