Smith Middle School ensemble advances to area competition
A taped recording of the 45-member Smith Middle School wind ensemble was reviewed Thursday by judges in the area round of the Texas Music Educators Association 2009 Honor Band auditions.
The Smith wind ensemble was one of two Region 7 middle school bands selected to advance to area after a review of its UIL recording at the regional round of the TMEA honor band competition.
A recording of Stephenville’s Henderson Junior High Band will also be reviewed by judges at the area contest, which is being conducted at Permian High School in Odessa.
“If our recording finishes in one of the top two places at area, it will advance to the state level, which is scheduled for late July in San Antonio,” said Smith Band Director Matthew Hiller, who conducts the wind ensemble.
“I’m so excited about this newest achievement, and I’m looking forward to what we can accomplish next year,” Hiller said. “All Smith band students should be proud of this accomplishment as it is a reflection of everyone’s hard work and dedication to ‘superior standards-superior success’ which is the motto of our music program.”
The Smith wind ensemble received the 2009 UIL Sweepstakes Award in April after receiving straight Superior ratings from judges in concert and sight reading performance.
This was the second consecutive year for the Smith Wind Ensemble to receive the Sweepstakes Award in UIL competition, which coincided with its first year to compete after CISD’s establishment of two middle schools, both serving grades 6-8.
Members of the Smith wind ensemble include: flutes: Madison Calvert, Caitland Campbell, Lauren Henager, Stefen Lott, Mary Anne Maxson; oboes: Lillian Peña, Timothy Ruffin; bassoon: Grant Koslowski; clarinets: Quinn Arrington, Kirsten Gray, Daniela Monsalve, Kelsey Stewart, Katie Tanner, Joey Walters, Bradlee Young; alto saxophones: Britton Barbee, Sarah Hinson, Becca Long; tenor saxophone: Oren Briggs; baritone saxophone: Annyssa Interrante; trumpets: Jessica Boulden, Chad Cochran, Kayla Gregory, Ryan Kirk, Kalyn Moore, Katy Rosser, Brian Smith; French horns: Will Conner, Brayden Hawkins, Calvin Rothell; trombones: Lina Fatton, Alyssa Flores, Hayden Halmcamp, Brennan Jones, Cameron Mitchell, Andrew Vidler; euphoniums: Marcus Cain, Sergio DeLaRosa; tuba: Spencer Saunders, David Shearer; percussion: Zach Dain, Kelly Gomez, Will House, Garrison Roe and Hope Scott.
