New scholarship honors CHS alumna
Among several new endowments added to the Cleburne High School scholarship program this year is an award honoring Barbara Voight Henry, CHS Class of 1951, for whom the scholarship is named.
The $1,000 endowment was established by James D. Henry of Dallas in honor of his wife and “in appreciation of the schools and teachers in Cleburne that helped make her the fine woman that she has become."
“James and Barbara Henry have been generous donors to charitable causes and have been especially interested in those aimed at helping needy children and young adults,” according to information accompanying the guidelines for the scholarship.
After graduation from CHS Barbara Henry enrolled in a Fort Worth business college. She was later employed as a secretary of a major oil company.
In 1959, the company transferred her to their regional headquarters in Midland, where she met and married Henry.
Shortly after their marriage, she developed major health problems, which were diagnosed as progressive multiple sclerosis, which forced her to retire from her full-time career.
“During her increasing disability, she showed remarkable adaptability and perseverance,” according to BarbaraHenry’s bio, “As well as continuing her intellectual and spiritual growth, and proved to be a valuable help” to her husband’s career.
The Barbara Voight Henry Scholarship will provide at least a $1,000 grant each year to a deserving senior female CHS graduate who is found to be “worthy and deserving because of scholastic standing and good moral character.”
The first recipient of the Barbara Voight Henry Scholarship is Sarah Stacy, who will study nursing at the University of Texas at Tyler.
