Filing period begins Monday for board seats
— Cleburne school board filing begins Monday and continues through March 9.
Places 6 and 7 could feature brand new candidates.
Place 6 incumbent M.J. Larrison said this week she’s undecided whether to run again but is leaning against it. So too is Place 7 incumbent Brad Mead.
“I’m leaning toward not running,” Mead said, “I’d like to wait and see who’s going to run, but I’ll decide pretty quickly. I’m not going to dilly-dally around.”
Tolin Navarrete, Matt Snider and Dewayne Burns filed for last year’s Place 3 race won by Wendell Dempsey. Snider and Burns ruled out another try.
Only Navarette said he might run.
“I’ve been asked countless times,” Navarette said. “My wife and I are talking it over.
“I was hoping to put off the decision until after Valentine’s Day,” he said with a chuckle. “I didn’t want to ruin Valentine’s.”
Supporters of Dempsey last year charged Navarrete with breaking a law by signing a treasurer’s report sheet promising not to spend more than $500 during the campaign, then spending more than $500.
The sheet Navarrete signed is a state form that does not require a specific spending limit.
Navarrete lost to Dempsey by a 1,059 to 1,007 margin. Snider had 353 votes.
Burns, on the ballot but ineligible to serve, had 124.
Navarrete said the last race had not left a bad taste in his mouth.
“No, that doesn’t bother me at all,” he said. “I’m proud of the race I ran. I ran a clean campaign. I made mistakes because of a lack of knowledge. If I run again, I’ll know several things to do differently.”
He said he would not have trouble serving on a board with his former opponent, Dempsey.
“Not at all. He was elected by the people.”
