The holidays are upon us
Well, we're at another Thanksgiving holiday this week. The older I get, the more I wish I could go back to Thanksgivings when I was a kid. It seems to be too much work being an adult. But I guess that's how it goes. Oh well, I'll make do. Here's wishing all of you a happy Thanksgiving. Be safe.

Thank God it's over
The presidential election is finally over. It couldn't have happened sooner for me. As I get older, election night in the newsroom gets tougher and tougher. I used to be able to stay up all night and enjoy it and have fun. On Nov. 4, all I can remember thinking is that I wanted someone to be declared the winner by 10 p.m. so I could go home by midnight. Of course, the presidential election was declared pretty early; however, Johnson County votes couldn't get counted before that happened. Go figure.

Election day is near
Election day is Tuesday and boy am I glad. I'm kind of tired of hearing about it. I early voted today so I am home free. If you haven't voted, please do so. It's a great right to have.

A tough life in Cowboy land
Wow. What an interesting time it is at Valley Ranch. Being a Cowboy fan is not too fun these days. Until Wade Phillips is gone, don't expect it to change. These overpaid babies need a little discipline. Bill Parcells went too far with his heavy hand because he didn't show them respect, which everyone deserves. But Phillips is just lost. Every shot of him on the sidelines during a game looks like a photo of a school kid who just had his milk money stolen. The Cowboys make my weekends enjoyable most of the time, but not at the present moment. Was it just me or did Brad Johnson look like he was 60 instead of 40 last week?

What's up with my Cowboys?
What a season. I was so excited about the Cowboys' chances this year but then all heck has broken loose. Romo is down and out, our punter is out, Terrence Newman is out and thank the good Lord above that we rid of Pacman Jones for a while. I say cut ties with the idiot. He doesn't deserve another chance with the Cowboys. Note, I didn't say he doesn't deserve another chance at life, just not making millions in football. Let's just hope that Brad Johnson can be a caretaker for the offense for a few games.

Can't we all just get along
Thank goodness election day is almost here. I'm so tired of hearing about polls and who is ahead in the presidential race. I'm tired of seeing Tina Fey pose as Sarah Palin. I think all four candidates in the presidential election — Obama, Biden, McCain and Palin — have faults. I'm not sure who I'm voting for just yet, but I do think it will be difficult for McCain to overcome the Obama train at this point.

It's going to be tough district
The Yellow Jackets ran into a buzzsaw on Friday night at Panther Stadium in Waco against Midway. Now that District 16-4A play has started, there are no more South Hills, Western Hills or Granburys to play. The Panthers beat Cleburne 43-0. Before Friday, the Jackets had given up only one touchdown in three games. I'm afraid this district is going to be as tough as it looked when the UIL realigned districts back in February.

My week
Well, my week was busy as usual. I did several interviews for an open reporter position at the TR. I hired a new person who will start Oct. 13, so be on the lookout for a new face around town asking questions. Also look for the newest edition of Community Life magazine in Sunday's paper. I also particpated as a judge in the Zonta Club's spelling bee at First Baptist Church. It was a lot of fun. Ben Oefinger was the pronouncer of the words and I'm glad. I'm not sure I could say some of the them.

Way to go Cleburne
Cleburne and Johnson County stepped once again by helping evacuees from Hurricane Ike. It's always great to see a community come together and make a difference. And judging by what some of the evacuees said about the Tyler shelter, it does make a difference. Not a bad word said about Cleburne.

What a crazy week
Man, it has been busy lately. And throw in Hurricane Ike and it got real nasty the last few days. What the gulf coast has gone through the last couple of days is the exact reason I never want to live on the oceanfront. Forget it. I'll live inland and visit the coast when I want to see the ocean. The thought of having to leave my house and all of my belongings behind every time there is a threat of a hurricane is just too much drama for me. We were on alert at the T-R in case some of our sister papers in Port Arthur, Orange, Hunstsville, Corsicana, Jacksonville, Athens and Palestine needed a place to work. That didn't come to fruition so I assume everyone is okay, which is the main focus, not whether or not we were able to publish newspapers.
