Welcome to Coyote Flats, Texas

Vote for potential city set for May 8

Cleburne, Keene and other Johnson County cities may soon be joined by a new burg dubbed Coyote Flats.

Provided, that is, that residents in the area vote to incorporate on May 8.

“If this passes, next month we’ll officially be incorporated as a thriving town,” said Theo Embry, a resident living in the area.

Embry hosted a meeting at his home on Wednesday night to afford residents the opportunity to discuss the idea and ask questions.

Quite a few residents residing in the affected area showed, he said.

“We ran out of chairs and had people standing, so that’s a good sign. I’d say probably 75 to 80, ” Embry said.

The population of the area under consideration for incorporation totals “a fraction over 200 people,” he said.

Embry said he’s fairly certain the measure calling for incorporation will pass.

“Two or three people had a lot of questions last night,” Embry said. “But they were for it. I think we only had one or so on the bad side of it.”

County Commissioner Don Beeson agrees the measure will probably pass.

“Some were against the idea, but the large majority of them seemed to be in favor of it,” Beeson said.

Although Beeson does not live within the proposed township, Precinct 4, Beeson’s precinct, covers the area.

Beeson said Embry invited him to Wednesday’s meeting for that reason and in case attendees had questions on road maintenance matters.

The area in question lies east of Cleburne and south of Keene. It includes portions of County Road 415, CR 417A and Farm-to-Market Road 2415.

Should they vote to incorporate, residents of the new town will be responsible for the maintenance of 2 1/2 to 3 miles of roadway now maintained by the county, Embry said.

Residents would also have to elect a council consisting of a mayor and two council members, he said.
