CHS counselor appointed to state board by Perry

Cleburne High School Counselor Ben Morris has been appointed by Gov. Rick Perry to serve on the Texas Education Agency’s State Board for Educator Certification.

The State Board for Educator Certification was established in 1995 by the Texas legislature to recognize public school educators as professionals and to grant educators the authority to govern the standards of their profession.

The 11-member board oversees all aspects of the preparation, certification and standards of conduct of public school educators.

The Texas Education Code requires the governor to appoint members to serve six-year terms.

The board is composed of four classroom teachers, one counselor, two administrators and four citizens.

Nonvoting members include a dean of a college of education appointed by the governor; a staff member of TEA appointed by the commissioner of dducation, and a staff member of the Texas Higher Education Coordinating Board appointed by the commissioner of higher education.

Board meetings are scheduled an average of five times a year.

“It’s an honor for me to serve,” said Morris, who has been a member of the CHS counseling department since 2003 as a guidance and crisis counselor. He also serves as the high school’s disabilities coordinator.

Morris has also served as a counselor for the Alvarado, Burleson and Joshua school districts. He began his career in education in Cleburne in 1992 as a middle school science teacher and was an elementary assistant principal with Hillsboro ISD.

He received a bachelor’s degree in biology from Baylor University, a secondary biology certification from Southwest Adventist University, and a master’s degree in education and certification in school counseling from Tarleton State University.

Morris is a member of Pi Lambda Theta-International Honor Society and Professional Association in Education. His term on SBEC will run to February 1, 2015.

New appointees to the State Board for Educator Certification also include Burleson High School government teacher and social studies department Chairman Bradley Allard.
