Academic excellence to be honored Monday
More than 180 Cleburne High School sophomores, juniors, seniors and ’09 graduates will be honored Monday evening for their achievements in the classroom at the annual Academic Excellence Awards presentation.
Sponsored for more than 25 years by St. Mark United Methodist Church, CHS students who achieved a cumulative grade point average of 4.6 or better in the 2008-09 school year will be honored.
The program will begin at 7 p.m. in the high school’s Don Smith Performing Arts Center.
First-time honorees will receive an Academic Excellence afghan. Repeat winners will be presented with certificates of achievement.
The Rev. Danny Niedecken, minister of St. Mark and the Academic Excellence Committee, will preside over the ceremony.
Other members of the Academic Excellence Committee are Chairman Glenda Young, co-chairmen Pat Cantrell and Janet Wallace, treasure Becky Snider, and Becky King, Martha Cole, Gretchen Niedecken, Janice Hinman and Bernadine Mariott.
“This is a great way to begin a new academic year,” said Principal Monte Pritchett. “These honorees worked very hard to achieve this receive this special recognition which for many serves as a motivator to keep up the good work.”

Geren: Fund balance needs to grow; now may not be time

Looking ahead to the next fiscal budget, Cleburne ISD trustees are looking to reduce spending in order to avoid a reduction in force, or staff layoffs, situation such as those recently experienced by Rio Vista ISD and under consideration at Crowley ISD, CISD Superintendant Dr. Ronny Beard said Monday.
