A long and winding rabbit trail ended for Quintin Mitchell Knox Sunday night as he was booked into Johnson County Law Enforcement Center on charges of deadly conduct, discharge of a firearm.
But the firearm is still missing, Sheriff Bob Alford said Tuesday morning, and Knox, 31, suffered numerous injuries before the arrest as he fled through a field from several men he believed were trying to harm him.
The men, Franklin Scottydale Spencer and Scott McDowell Spencer, were also taken into custody. Franklin Spencer, 19, was charged with aggravated assault with a deadly weapon.
Scott Spencer, 44, was charged with aggravated assault with a deadly weapon and possession of a controlled substance, Penalty Group 1.
Bond for Knox and Franklin Spencer was set at $150,000 each.
Bond for Scott Spencer was $150,000 on the assault charge and $25,000 on the controlled substance charge.
Officers were initially alerted to a disturbance in the 6900 block of County Road 913 near Godley at about 8 p.m., Alford said.
Knox entered a residence and was attacked by the two Spencers with an axe handle, he said.
“They tried to subdue him and beat on him some,” Alford said.
Deputies determined that Knox had been in the middle of a narcotics deal and was attempting to recover a stolen handgun at separate location, according to a press release from Alford.
“Knox was attacked with a large wooden instrument by the two individuals with whom he was dealing, [the Spencers]. Knox reported he was beaten in his head with the axe handle, and one of the individuals pulled a large caliber handgun and shot above Knox’s head.”
Knox reportedly wrestled the gun away from the two men and fled through a field, losing his shirt and trousers along the way, leaving him clad only in his underwear.
”We got his shirt,” Alford said.
Unfortunately for a good Samaritan, Knox still had the Spencers’ firearm.
“A resident of the same street had just returned home when he heard someone yelling, ‘Help me, help me,’ numerous times in a large field,” according to the press release. “This individual had his family go in the house and then [the individual] drove down the road with his flashlight looking for the individual who was [yelling for help].”
Knox reportedly fired shots in the direction of the flashlight.
“After a brief period of time, the resident reports that four to five shots were fired in his direction, and he could hear them passing by him,” the press release stated. “This individual then turned off the flashlight and immediately left the area and called 911, reporting the incident to the sheriff’s office. The individual firing these shots was ... Knox.”
Knox continued to flee through the field and attempted to give the gun to a resident.
“They slammed the door,” Alford said.
Knox approached one last house, knocked, and when residents came to the door, “he barged in,” Alford said.
Knox collapsed, bleeding, on the kitchen floor. The residents, alarmed, called authorities.
“A man comes into your house in his underwear that time of night, you begin to get a little worried,” Alford said.
According to Alford, Knox suffered injuries that included lost teeth, a swollen right eye and lacerations from the bottom lip to the bottom of his chin
Four Johnson County deputies and a state trooper responded to the assorted calls.
Assistance was provided by Shepherd Valley Rescue and Citizens on Patrol from Burleson.
“We had someone at the scene until 10 [Monday] morning,” Alford said. “We’re still lookiung for the .45, which is what Knox had. That’s the same gun the Spencers fired at him. The weapon is probably in that field. Everything is cordoned off.”

Rescue workers pull body from water
Alvarado and Cleburne firefighters pulled the body of a man from moving water near County Road 607 caused by rain about 1 p.m. Wednesday. The man attempted to cross a high-water crossing in his truck and became stuck, Cleburne Fire Chief Clint Ishmael said. According to reports, rescue workers saw the man in the water earlier Wednesday morning but were unable to reach him. The identity of the man has not been released.
