As in past years, more than 3 million lights will transform Hulen Park into a Christmas wonderland. Cleburne’s Whistle Stop Christmas is but one of several yuletide events occurring throughout the city.
A nativity scenes, lights, music and other decorations will fill the 12-acre park. Cleburne Chamber of Commerce members, Johnson County Sheriff’s Office inmate workers, and other volunteers have been preparing the park for the holiday season for several weeks.
The lights go on at 7 p.m. Monday and will be lit each evening until Dec. 31.
A multitude of lights illuminating Hulen Park’s centerpiece, the old steam train locomotive known as Engine 3417, should be a favorite again this year, organizers said.
Children will be allowed to blow the train’s whistle at designated times during Whistle Stop.
The Hulen Park lights are just the beginning of Christmas 2009 in Cleburne.
Christmas lights will also grace Winston Patrick McGregor Park for the first time this year. The park, on the corner of West Henderson Street and Colonial Drive, opened in February.
Several Christmas events occur on Dec. 4.
The annual Christmas parade in downtown begins at 7 p.m. The theme of this year’s parade is Treasured Traditions of Christmas.
After the parade, numerous festivities kick off at Hulen Park. Santa and Mrs. Claus will be on hand for pictures. The night will include crafts, food, fun and Christmas music performed by local groups. The event is free.
The Greater Cleburne Carnegie Players’ production of “The Best Christmas Pageant Ever” begins the same night and continues through Dec. 13.
The play will be staged at the Layland Museum on 201 N. Caddo St.
The show plays every Friday and Saturday at 7:30 p.m. A 2:30 p.m. show will be performed on Saturdays and Sundays. For information visit www.carnegieplayers.com.
The Plaza Theatre Company’s production of “Sanders Family Christmas” began Friday and continues through Dec. 23.
