Auxiliary preparing Christmas stockings for troops
Cleburne American Legion Auxiliary Unit 50 is seeking volunteers to help sew stockings and candy bags to mail to more than 1,500 troops deployed in Iraq and Afghanistan.
Together with other American Legion Auxiliary Units in the Sixth District, including Alvarado American Legion Auxiliary Unit 426, the goal is to complete the stockings by Nov. 3 so they can be filled with donated goods shipped in time for Christmas.
“I know Johnson County can meet this deadline with their generous donations of time and fabric,” said Barbara Kundert of Alvarado, Department of Texas American Legion Auxiliary president.
Christmas cards addressed to service personnel will be included in the mailing.
Any type of fabric can be used, and a pattern for the stocking size and shape is available for uniformity.
Volunteers should contact 817-475-2885 to arrange for a pattern.
The legion is also asking for donations of items needed for monthly troop shipments and for the Christmas boxes.
Needed are empty shoe boxes; toilet paper rolls; ribbon; newspaper comics; new or used issues of men’s magazines, such as cars, hunting, fishing and sports; writing utensils; batteries; soft cover books; white and black crew socks; moistened towelettes; toothbrushes; 6 inch combs; assorted packaged drinks; assorted dried fruit packages; microwave soups, individually packaged cookies, crackers and candy; jerky; packaged tuna and chicken; cards; dominos; travel-size games; insect repellent wipes; fingernail clippers; and emery boards.
Also needed are travel-sized, nonaerosol shaving cream, toothpaste, hand sanitizer, facial tissue, cotton swabs, deodorant, foot powder, talcum powder, mouthwash and soap containers.
