Annual passes available

Commissioners working on road problems

Work continues to make Hamm Creek Park completely operational, said Johnson County Commissioner Rick Bailey.

Annual day-use passes for the park are now available for $30. Recreational vehicle sites should be available for use by Aug. 1, Bailey said.

Commissioners hired Monty Bessent to be park supervisor on Monday. Bessent has several years of park experience, including a stint at Cleburne State Park, Bailey said.

U.S. Army Corps of Engineers workers, who performed renovations at the park, will soon review and address boat ramps at the park, Bailey said.

Telephone service has been installed at the park. The number is 817-556-9311.

Hamm Creek Park is west of Rio Vista on 6957 W. Farm-to-Market Road 916. From Texas 174, turn west on FM 916 and continue about eight miles. The park entrance is on the left.

Road work

Commissioners in all precincts have received calls about problems with roads bleeding through their gravel surface, said Commissioner Don Beeson on Wednesday.

“We’re all hearing it,” Beeson said. “It’s all over. The Texas Department of Transportation people are getting calls on it too. This is normally the time of year we do road work, but we’re having trouble getting roads to set in because of the heat.”

Recent hot days have caused the oil-based, emulsified asphalt product, which is shot down before applying gravel to road surfaces, to seep or bleed through, Beeson said.

Commissioners are doing everything they can to correct the problem, Beeson said, but added that in some cases, not much can be done until the temperatures cool down a bit.

“But we’re, especially in the worst cases, bringing another load or rock to lay down to try to build up the roads so that stuff won’t bleed through, trying to reign the problem in,” Beeson said.
