Multiple truck wreck closes U.S. 67

A wreck involving two tractor trailers and a sports utility vehicle sent two people to area hospitals and shut down both sides of U.S. 67 for several hours on Thursday morning.

Two other people involved in the wrecks were treated at the scene and did not require hospitalization, rescue workers said.

Two CareFlite helicopters landed on the highway to transport the injured parties to area hospitals. Details about the names and conditions of both have not been released.

Investigation continues into the cause of the wrecks, police said.

According to early indications, one of the tractor trailers entered U.S. 67 from the Texas 174 access road at about 7:45 a.m. intending to turn left and head east. The driver apparently swung wide while making the turn into oncoming westbound traffic.

The second tractor trailer, westbound on U.S. 67, struck the first virtually head on, rescue workers said. The second tractor trailer then jackknifed and struck and flipped a Ford Explorer.

The second tractor trailer also caught on fire in the wreck. Rescue workers treated the driver of the Ford at the scene, and said she did not require hospitalization.
