Cleburne
Graphic novelist to present talk on Gen. Cleburne story
Patrick Cleburne: a young Confederate soldier who rose from private to general in one year, a leader who dashed into battle with his men and lost his life in 1864, an Irish American who served his chosen country and inspired love and loyalty in battle-hardened men. Cleburne is his namesake because of the respect of his men.
“Cleburne, A Graphic Novel” is a book of pictures and script, blending truth and fictional conversation, by Justin Murphy of Florida. Murphy will be in Cleburne on Saturday.
Layland Museum has asked him to give a talk about his chronicle of the last year of Cleburne’s life at 10:30 a.m. and then do a book signing. Refreshments will be served; the event is free.
While in the museum, history buffs may enjoy seeing Cleburne’s pistol and accoutrements and restored saddle, as well as a homespun, handmade uniform by Mrs. Marchbanks at the museum.
The research library has material on the general’s life. Cleburne’s proposal that African Americans be asked to serve as soldiers, receiving their freedom upon enlistment is well-documented.
Justin Murphy is an author and artist with more than 15 years of industry experience. His first comic book series received international distribution with Diamond Comics from 1992-1996. He has also written two stage plays, “Eagle Song,” starring Jamie-Lynn Sigler, and “Fallen Angel.”
He won the award from Most Outstanding Musical at the 2006 New York International Festival with “Fallen Angel.”
He credits his creative team, inker Al Milgrom, Marvel Comics veteran for books like The Incredible Hulk and X Factor, and colorist J. Brown, Marvel Comics’ Civil War and Captain America.
“Cleburne,” Rampart Press’s first publication, has already been honored with the 2008 Xeric Award and featured on the cover of Publishers Weekly.
Other events planned are an informal breakfast and discussion with the author from 8-10 a.m. at the Chaf In Restaurant, a reception from 2-5 p.m. at the Johnson County Chisholm Trail Museum, and a book signing from 5:30-7:30 p.m. at the Wright Plaza, hosted by The General Pat Cleburne No. 436.
Books may be purchased for $24.95 at each event.
The Comic Boxx will be offering 100 signed and numbered copies with a certificate of authenticity for an additional $5 to be donated t the Family Crisis Center of Johnson County.
