Dog days of summer mean Dachshund Days

As summer drawns to a close, Camp Fire USA Tesuya Council members are busying planning the third annual Dachshund Days.

The event, which features dachshund races, will take place from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday at Hulen Park, 1010 Hillsboro St.

“We had 53 dogs the first year. We’re hoping to have 75 dogs or more this year,” said Tammy Derden, Dachshund Days coordinator.

Admission is free for all events except the races.

A costume contest opens registration at 9 a.m., with the costume parade at 9:30 a.m. Any breed of dog may enter the contest.

“The costume contest does have four different categories this year,” Derden said.

The categories are formal wear, cutest, most original, and best dog and owner pair.

Prizes of $20 will be awarded to the winner in each category.

Cost for the races is $15, and owners can register their pets up until the day of the event.

Qualifying races begin at 10:30 a.m.

All dogs must have current shots and must be on a leash. Owners are required to clean up after the dogs. Owners may bring one dog toy on the track.

“Each dog that is entered will also receive a goodie bag,” Derden said.

First place prize is $100, second place is $50, and third place is $25.

To register for the dog races, call 817-556-2382 or e-mail

Other activities include a dog talent show, T-shirt and souvenir items, craft booths, photography, bounce houses, face painting and concessions.

“We’ve got two concession booths and about nine craft booths, so our craft booths are expanding,” she said.”

A new addition this year is an agility dog demonstration, set for 11:30 a.m. at the race track.

“Agility dogs run an obstacle course,” Derden said.

Madison Musick will perform at the pavilion from 11-11:30 a.m., and the Bad News Skate Board Team will perform a demonstration at the pavilion from 1:45-2:15 p.m. The dog talent show begins at 3 p.m.

Major sponsors for the event include Liberty Hotel, United Cooperative Services, Home Depot and United Way of Johnson County.

Camp Fire will also be accepting pet food donations or monetary donations for Animeals, a program they are conducting for Meals-on-Wheels of Johnson and Ellis Counties.
