BISD names interim superintendent

The Burleson school board announced the appointment of Richard Crummel to interim superintendent to replace Dr. Mark Jackson, who announced Friday that would retire at the end of July.

Crummel is the district’s chief administrative officer.

“I am humbled by this offer to serve the students, parents and staff of BISD as Interim Superintendent,” Crummel said after a special meeting of the board Monday. “I have deep affection for Burleson and plan to finish my career here and serve the district in any capacity I can.”

Crummel has 38 years experience in education, including 31 in the Burleson school district. Before serving as principal at the high school, Crummel served in the capacities of band director, director of instrumental and choral music and assistant principal. He has also served as the executive director of learning supports and public relations.

Crummel earned a bachelor’s degree in music education from North Texas State and master’s from East Texas State University. He earned his mid-management and superintendent certification from Tarleton State.

The district will host a reception for Jackson on May 26 in the boardroom at the district’s administration building, 1160 S.W Wilshire Blvd.

“As an educator and leader, he is a master at articulating his vision and goals,” Crummel said. “He makes certain that the community voice is heard and most importantly he has taught us that we must examine data and constantly look for ways to improve.”
