Deputy injured in chase

Twin brothers arrested on multiple charges

A Johnson County sheriff’s deputy was injured early Wednesday morning after a fleeing suspect rammed his patrol car.

The chase resulted in the arrest of two 30-year-old twin brothers.

Deputy Justin Smith was on routine patrol in the 5600 block of Farm-to-Market Road 917 in Joshua when he observed a suspicious, large dually pickup, according to reports.

The vehicle fled when Smith turned around to make contact with the suspects, who were traveling toward Burleson.

The truck stopped in the middle of the road in the 2800 block of East Renfro Street in Burleson, according to reports.

Smith stopped his patrol car and was about to order the suspects to get out of the truck when the truck’s rear backup lights came on and the driver accelerated rapidly and rammed Smith’s patrol car, according to reports.

The impact caused significant damage to the right front of Smith’s patrol car and injured Smith.

Smith suffered “some bumps and bruises” but is otherwise OK, said Sheriff Bob Alford.

Despite injury and damage to his car, Smith managed to continue his pursuit of the pickup.

Deputy Kenneth Moser deployed spike strips at the intersection of East Renfro and Christopher Lane, which punctured the right front tire of the pickup.

The truck continued to flee at a reduced speed because of the flat tire, according to reports.

The vehicle broke down at the intersection of Houston and Brooks roads.

JCSO deputies and officers ordered both suspects to get out of the truck, which they refused to do, according to reports.

After a short time, deputies managed to take both suspects, Corey Mathis and Casey Mathis, into custody.

Deputies determined that the pickup had been stolen out of Fort Worth.

The truck also sported stolen license plates, according to reports. Deputies found tools used in the burglary in the possession of the suspects.

Corey Mathis was booked into the Johnson County Law Enforcement Center on aggravated assault with a deadly weapon against a public servant, evading arrest or detention with a vehicle and theft of property $20,000-$100,000.

His bonds have been set at $90,000.

Casey Mathis was booked on charges of theft of property $20,000-$100,000 and Tarrant County warrants.

His bonds total $33,500.
