MCL hosting charity golf tourney
The Longhorn Detachment of the Marine Corps League serves the community through charitable events like Toys for Tots each November and December, Memorial Day services and July 4th celebrations.
To help continue funding, they ask the community to give back with a round of golf.
The Marine Corps League charity golf tournament will be held at the Hidden Creek Golf Course on Oct. 14, beginning with a shotgun start at 1 p.m.
Individuals may register for $90 and a team of four for $320, which includes the tournament, lunch, two mulligans per player and entrance into the “closest to the hole” and “longest straight drive” contests for trophies, medals and prizes.
“There are a few of us that play golf, but we have never organized a tournament. We spoke of this for about three years,” said Bill Hardisty, junior vice commandant for the Longhorn Detachment and retired Marine and high school principal. “Back in January at one of our first meetings, we talked about a tournament and about three or four of us decided, ‘Let’s do it.’ ”
Hardisty said the detachment hopes to register 72 golfers and reach $6,000 for this first tournament, with 45 percent going to Crowley House of Hope, Burleson Harvest House and Wounded Warriors.
The remaining 55 percent will go to the Longhorn Detachment to fund future projects, including visiting and helping a junior Reserve Officers’ Training Corps unit at an area middle school.
The Longhorn Detachment, chartered in 2001, follows the same guidelines and by-laws as the National MCL, but the founders began with an separate goal in mind.
“When we chartered, we wanted to be community-oriented and reach out to more than just Marines, we wanted to reach out to areas in the community so we could be of help to them,” he said. “That might make us a little different, I think.”
The Marine Corps League is a national organization chartered by the 74th Congress in 1937 for the purpose of assisting fellow Marines and Fleet Marine Force Corpsmen when needed from more than 900 detachments across the country.
To register, contact David Nelson at 817-690-7352, Hardisty at 682-667-1025, Fred Bailey at 817-447-1327 or Ted Beckman at 817-426-0705. Applications and checks can be mailed to Longhorn Detachment, MCL, P.O. Box 938, Crowley, TX 76036.
Registration ends Oct. 7.
