The 2011 Lone Star Chrysler Dodge Jeep Autoplex All-Johnson-County football team has been announced. The team was chosen by the Times-Review sports department based on all-district selections and coaches’ nominations.

Four of Johnson County’s eight football teams qualified for the postseason in 2011 with Alvarado making it all the way to the Class 3A Division I state championship game at Cowboys Stadium against Tyler Chapel Hill. The Indians lost the game, 20-19.

Burleson, Grandview and Godley also made the playoffs. The Elks bowed out in the first round to eventual state finalist Waco Midway, 35-13, and Grandview lost in the area round to Daingerfield, 49-7.

Godley defeated Bangs, 56-7, in the first round, but lost to Muleshoe, 46-27, in the area round.

The Indians featured four superlative selections on the All-Johnson-County team.

Senior running back Wayne Onderdonck became the first running back in Alvarado school history to rush for more than 3,000 yards. He finished with 3,018 yards on 349 attempts and had 31 touchdowns and was a first-team sll-state running back selection on the Texas Sports Wirters’ Association all-state team.

He was named the most valuable player of District 8-3A.

“It means a lot, especially with the other coaches from across the county recognizing my talent,” Onderdonck said. “I give all the credit to my offensive line and to my team because without them I don’t get this award. It means a lot.”

Alvarado Head Coach Jeff Dixon said Onderdonck will be hard to replace next year.

“He always stepped up with his leadership from within,” Dixon said. “He played big, which we knew he could, and he just has that passion for winning and work. The kids feed off of that. I really can’t speak highly enough about what he meant for our program.”

Onderdonck was a three-year starter on the Indians’ varsity and saw playing time on the varsity as a freshman.

“I know the honor means a great deal to him,” Dixon said. “He’s wanting to play at the next level and he was in the playoffs for us every year. That’s another thing which helped him.”

Despite the heartbreaking end to the season, Onderdonck said the thrill of playing in the state title game was something he won’t soon forget.

“To get this award is a real blessing,” he said. “I’ll never forget it. It’s a once-in-a-lifetime thing for me since I’m a senior, but being there was the best thing in the world. It means a lot when you’ve got a bunch of guys like that coming together who love the game of football and watching you play.

“I could look up in the stands and see just how many people were supporting us.”

Dixon was awarded the coach of the year honor for the second year in a row on the All Johnson County Team. In the last two years, Dixon has helped lead the Indians to a 26-3 record.

Grandview junior quarterback Ryan Breton had a breakout year in his first year starting under center and was named the offensive most valuable player for his efforts in leading Grandview to another District 6-2A title.

He completed 126-of-186 passes for 2,133 yards, 24 touchdowns with just five interceptions.

He also rushed for 547 yards on 65 carries and scored six touchdowns. He was named the offensive MVP in the 6-2A selections.

The defensive MVP award went to Alvarado senior Tyler Bates.

The 5-7 defensive back was awarded the Ironman accolade last year, which recognizes players who excel on both offense and defense.

Bates finished with 39 tackles, but his eight interceptions led Johnson County. In 2010, he finished with 11. He earned the same accolade in the 8-3A selections and was a second-team all-state defensive back selection.

Grandview’s Austin Martinez is this year’s Ironman award winner. In Martinez’s senior year at Grandview after moving from Godley, he finished with 206 rushing yards on 24 carries, he caught 50 passes for 824 yards and played safety for the Zebras.

He was named the Ironman of the year in the 6-2A selections.

Alvarado sophomore lineman Brazos Fuller and Burleson sophomore running back Ayinde Alaajiy are the newcomers of the year. Fuller earned the accolade in the 8-3A selections and played a key role on the offensive line in the Indians’ run to the state title game.

Alaajiy had a breakout year for Burleson during his first varsity season.

He rushed for 1,330 yards on 226 carries and scored 11 touchdowns. He also caught 13 passes for 121 yards.

Godley’s Blake Washington and Grandview’s Davis Scarbrough were named the county’s linemen of the year after receiving the same honors in their all-district selections.
