Dr. Sharron Miles, Cleburne ISD executive director of special projects, announced Friday she is retiring.
“After much thought and prayer, I am announcing my retirement,” Miles wrote in a letter to Interim Superintendent Dr. James Warlick. “I want to express my appreciation for the opportunity to work with CISD for the last seven years. I have had the opportunity to be surrounded by professional staff, great parents and wonderful students. It has been an honor to serve this district.”
Miles, 61, declined to comment further on her retirement.
Miles indicated she will remain on the job full time through June 30, and will be available on call through Nov. 7.
“I will be transitioning after June 30,” Miles said. “I will also be assisting the district in training those who will be taking over my duties.”
Miles has been with the district seven years. Her retirement announcement comes almost exactly two months after saying she had no plans to leave the district in the wake of a financial report from the Texas Education Agency.
“I don’t have any plans on retiring today or anytime soon,” Miles said April 4. “I just had my contract renewed for two years and I feel the board would not have done that if they weren’t satisfied with the job I do in the district.”
At a special called May 20 meeting, the school board named Miles as one of five administrators to oversee a portion of the district’s federal grant procedures. District spokeswoman Lisa Magers said Friday she had not heard any talks about who would take over Miles’ portion of the procedures.
As executive director of special projects, Miles’ responsibilities included adult and community education, English as a Second Language and bilingual services, health and emergency management and coordination of services for students meeting homeless, migrant and immigrant federal guidelines.
Miles has a total of 39 years in public education, including 18 years with Rio Vista ISD, where she served as superintendent from 1990-2001, preceded by seven years as principal of Rio Vista Elementary.
She began her career in 1969 as a speech therapist with San Marcos ISD, later serving as a speech therapist and resource teacher in the Alamo Heights and Temple school districts.
In 1975 she was named special education supervisor at Temple and the next year accepted the position of special education director of the Bell County Cooperative in association with Bartlett ISD.
Miles is a member and past-president of the Cleburne Rotary Club, and serves on its Cleburne Foundation as secretary. In addition, she is the secretary for Rotary’s District 5790.
Miles is also president of the Johnson County Campus Foundation Board of Hill College and is a past-president of Cleburne Chamber of Commerce, receiving the Wall of Fame and Athena Awards in 2004; United Way of Johnson County; Texas Community Education Association and Heritage Assembly.
She is the district governor for Zonta International and has served as an area director and lieutenant governor. She served as president of the Johnson County chapter of Zonta in 1999-2001.
