FORT WORTH —
On Friday night, both Cleburne basketball teams took on Crowley at Crowley High School and both experienced similar results.
Neisha Moore helped lead Crowley to a 66-57 win over Cleburne with 28 points in the opener of the doubleheader.
Bailey Broadnax put in Crowley’s first two baskets down low, and Cleburne committed three consecutive turnovers in the opening two and a half minutes as the Lady Eagles took a 6-0 lead on a basket by Moore.
Cleburne didn’t get on the board until the 3:24 mark of the first quarter when Lacy Stinebaugh made one of two free throws.
She brought Cleburne to within 8-3 on a bucket, and after the missed free throw, Bailey Hafford went to the line for two shots.
She missed the first but made the second to pull the Lady Jackets to within 8-4. Stinebaugh banked in a 3-pointer with less than a minute remaining to pull Cleburne to within a point and Avery Hough capped off a 9-0 run with a layup to give Cleburne the lead.
Crowley’s Mishayla Williams was fouled on a shot as time expired in the first quarter. She missed the first and made the second to tie the score at 9-9 after the first quarter.
Crowley took a three-point lead at 16-13 on a basket by Be’Andra Porter, but the Lady Jackets tied it after a free throw and a basket from Jasline Chandler. Hafford hit a free throw to give Cleburne a brief one-point lead, but Crowley responded with a 3-pointer to take back the advantage. Crowley stretched the advantage to 21-17, but the Lady Jackets rallied to tie the game on a driving basket by Bria McCullough.
Another basket by McCullough in the final seconds of the first half brought Cleburne to within 27-25. The Lady Jackets went 10-of-16 from the line in the first half.
Moore helped key an 11-4 run for Crowley in the third quarter as the Lady Eagles regained control of the contest.
Stinebaugh had 16 points to lead Cleburne and McCullough finished with 13.
In the nightcap, Crowley cruised to a 56-35 win over the Yellow Jackets, sending Cleburne 12-14 and 2-9 in District 7-4A play.
After a 4-3 lead, Crowley used a 7-0 run to take control of the first period. Deondre Ray and Kyle Wilson combined for all of Crowley’s first 13 points.
The Eagles remained in control in the second quarter and stretched their lead to 27-9 after two free throws by Daneaz Moses.
By halftime, Wilson and Ray had combined for 19 points as Crowley led, 36-11, at the break. Steven Lawson pitched in six first-half points including a buzzer-beating jumper in the lane to end the first half.
Martyniuk put in a couple of high-arcing buckets in the third quarter as Cleburne went on a 7-3 run to cut the lead to 39-18.
Crowley regained control and led, 48-24, heading into the final period after a Wilson put-back slam and a Martyniuk runner in the lane at the horn.
Ray and Wilson each finished with 13 points and Lawson finished with 11.
Martyniuk was the lone bright spot for Cleburne and he led all scorers with 26 points.
Both Cleburne basketball teams are back in action at home on Tuesday as they play host to Joshua. It will be the final game of the Lady Jackets’ and Lady Owls’ seasons.
The girls tip off at 6:30 p.m. with the boys following at 8 p.m.
The Jackets still have games left against Everman (8 p.m. Friday, on the road) and Arlington Seguin (8 p.m., Feb. 14 at home).
