Alvarado High School debate club preparing for Decision ’09

By Tommy Brown/Special to the Times-Review

Although only state constitutional elections are on the slate in November, the Alvarado High School Debate Club is getting a jump on next year’s busy political season with Decision ’09 at 7 p.m. on Oct. 13 at the high school auditorium.

Last year’s inaugural event featured local politicians and pro-candidate speeches about each presidential candidate from Alvarado students.

This time the focus will be on statewide politics with gubernatorial candidates Rick Perry, Kay Bailey Hutchison, Debra Medina, Steve Nichols, Hank Gilbert, Felix Alvarado and Tom Schieffer planning to attend in person or through recorded messages.

Participants will speak on their own behalf, discussing the plans and changes they would make should they have the opportunity to be governor.

Parts of the night will focus on national issues when Chet Edwards and Rob Curnock make health care presentations.

The Baylor University debate team will also present its nuclear weapons traveling topic.

“Last year Congressman Edwards stated ‘[No] one party has a monopoly on wisdom,’ ” said organizer and Debate Club sponsor Lark Johnston. “I’m elated that our AHS Debate Club is building on last year’s Decision event by organizing a forum that listens to and honors all sides of the issues in order to allow people to come to their own intelligent conclusions.

“I hope our community will join us as we work to become more informed citizens.”
