Alvarado PD receives stimulus funds
The Alvarado Police Department will receive $176,675 in funding from stimulus legislation signed by President Barack Obama on Feb. 17.
The grants will be administered by the U.S. Department of Justice Office of Community Oriented Policing Services, or COPS, through the agency’s COPS Hiring Recovery Program.
The funds, which will allow the department to hire an additional officer, will provide 100 percent of the salary and benefits for an entry-level officer over a three-year period.
Alvarado, and other departments receiving the grant, will then be required to retain the grant-funded positions for a fourth year.
“Ensuring the safety of our communities is one of my top priorities,” said U.S. Rep. Chet Edwards, D-Waco. “Creating jobs and protecting Alvarado families are positive uses of federal stimulus funds.”
Alvarado Police Chief Josh Vincent said his department is pleased and honored to be a recipient of the COPS grant and thanked Edwards for his assistance in securing the funds.
Earlier this year, Edwards also announced that the police departments in Cleburne and Burleson received $191,643 in stimulus funding.
